Finnish metal strike over

25 October, 2011The strike in the Finnish metal sector ended October 25 when the Metalworkers' Union and the salaried employees' union Pro approved the conciliation proposal of the State conciliator. YTN has not yet renewed its agreement. A strike of professional and managerial staff still threatens in the metal industry.

FINLAND: The new collective agreement between Pro, the Metalworkers and the Technology Industries will run for two years, until the end of October 2013. It is based on the framework agreed by the central organizations.

It will bring all covered employees the same minimum income increase. The head shop steward and the employer will start negotiations at the workplaces on the amount, timetable and implementation of the pay rise. If nothing else is agreed by December 5 there will be a general pay rise of 2,4 per cent retroactively from October.

In 2012 local negotiations should be concluded by the end of October. After that wages will increase by 1,9 per cent. In January 2012 a lump sum of 150 Euro will be paid.

The parties also agreed on three training days for all employees, allocated by the employer. The government and the central organizations must agree on the details at the latest by the end of May next year.

This negotiation round was characterized by close co-operation between the Finnish member unions of Nordic IN, EMF and IMF - the Metalworkers' Union, the salaried employees' union Pro and the Federation of Professional and Managerial Staff YTN. The union leaders now hope that the experience will increase cooperation also in the day-to-day activities in the workplaces.

YTN has not yet renewed its agreement. A strike of the professional and managerial staff still threatens the metal industry. If no agreement with YTN can be reached on working conditions and salaries by the end of October, a new strike could start in November.
