Towards a convention on gender based violence in the workplace

7 June, 2018The annual International Labour Conference (ILC) started in Geneva on 28 May, where Director-General Guy Ryder opened the conference calling for strong action to end violence and harassment at the workplace. Delegates from governments, workers and employers from the 187 ILO Member states came together to negotiate the nature and the scope of a future instrument on violence and harassment at work.

African unions condemn global trade in used clothes as it suffocates textile sector

7 June, 2018African countries export cotton to Asia where it is spun into yarn and made into fabric from which garments are made and sold to big brands in Europe and the USA. Charity and thrift shops then buy the clothes after they have been worn and discarded. On the bottom of the consumption chain are African countries that import bales of the used clothes, and even underwear, for sale in the thriving informal markets common on the continent.

Exxon bars workers from joining shareholders’ meeting

1 June, 2018Members of IndustriALL Australian affiliate AMWU travelled to Dallas, Texas in the US, to attend ExxonMobil’s annual shareholders’ meeting on 30 May to raise concerns over the long-running conflict at the company’s subsidiary Esso Australia. However, once there the four workers were denied entry despite having the necessary documents.  

Haitian government denounced at the ILO
