11 December, 2000Five metalworkers' unions have decided to form a joint union, the Zimbabwe Metalworkers' Union.
ZIMBABWE: After many years of discussions within the Zimbabwe Metalworkers' Federation (ZMF), its five affiliated unions have decided to transform the federation into a union called the Zimbabwe Metalworkers' Union, ZIMU.
The five unions are:
Automotive and Allied Workers' Union of Zimbabwe;
National Engineering Workers' Union of Zimbabwe;
Iron and Steel Workers' Union of Zimbabwe;
Zimbabwe Radio & TV Electronics Mfg Workers' Union;
Zimbabwe Motor Vehicle Manufacturing & Assembly Workers' Union.
All of them have been affiliated to the International Metalworkers' Federation through the loose federation of the ZMF, with approximately 25,000 members.
The IMF has for some time tried to encourage and support the merger into one union. After a long process, the decision was taken on December 2 this year.
