PORTUGAL: A very serious situation has developed in Portugal concerning the two plants owned by the Japanese multinational company Yazaki, a major worldwide machine tool manufacturer.
The company, established in Portugal in 1986 and with approximately 7,600 employees one of the country's largest multinationals, informed the Portuguese metalworkers' union SIMA today, February 1, that it intends to close its Vila Nova de Gaia plant and will dismiss part of the workforce at its other operation located in Ovar.
The general secretary of SIMA, José Antonio Simões, declared that as a result of this decision thousands of workers will be unemployed. "SIMA is using all its means at national level," he said, "to overcome this crisis situation." The IMF affiliate organises the majority of Yazaki workers in the country.
