3 February, 2000The workers' representatives on the Mannesmann supervisory board will go along with the proposed merger of the two multinationals.

GERMANY: In a press release issued today, February 4, the German metalworkers' union IG Metall states that, based on the industrial policy concept elaborated for the merger of Mannesmann and Vodafone, IG Metall and the workers' representatives on the Mannesmann supervisory board have accepted the proposed merger of the two multinational companies.
The concept also says the project of integrating the fixed-line, mobile phone and Internet operations will be taken over by Vodafone. This was not the intention when Vodafone first began its attempt at a hostile takeover of Mannesmann.
Klaus Zwickel, president of IG Metall and also vice-president of Mannesmann's supervisory board, declared: "We support the merger as workers' representatives on the Supervisory Board."
Düsseldorf will be one of two headquarters in Europe for the merged company. The engineering and automotive divisions will, according to Mannesmann's plans, be independent shareholding companies. Vodafone will continue Mannesmann's business in seamless steel tubes, as well as the strategic partnerships with other companies in this sector.
The IG Metall workers' representatives do not expect changes in either co-determination rights or the collective bargaining rights of the employees. Respective collective agreements will remain valid for Mannesmann's 130,000 employees.
