12 October, 1999The U.S labour movement organises Internet access to its union members.

USA: The AFL-CIO is launching a new high-technology programme that will offer discounted computers and on-line service to its 13 million union members. The purpose is to make on-line service more affordable for the members and to tie unions more closely to their members.
John Sweeney, the AFL-CIO president, says: "We are helping bridge the gap between technological haves and have-nots. We are also giving working families new ways to connect with one another and to make their voices heard."
The AFL-CIO includes 68 unions. The new Internet service will be unusual in that members of each union will enter Web portals specific to their union when they go on-line. Union presidents are looking forward, with the click of a button, to send e-mail messages to hundreds of thousands of members.
