5 February, 2001The company's South African subsidiary has requested a review of the ruling made by the CCMA.

SOUTH AFRICA: On January 23, 2001, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) ruled that Volkswagen South Africa had to rehire by February 5 the 1,300 workers at its Uitenhage plant who were fired by the company last year.
Now, however, VW's South African subsidiary has asked the Labour Court to "review" this ruling and filed an application on February 2 to the Court requesting that the reinstatement of the workers be deferred until the outcome of the review is known. The Labour Court consented and has prevented the workers from returning to their jobs pending the outcome.
According to informed sources, the workers met on February 4 and agreed to put off any protests until they know the results of the review.
It was one year ago that the 1,300 workers were fired by the company for having taken "illegal" strike action. The CCMA ruled this past January that the company's procedure for the dismissals was unfair and that the workers had to be reemployed.
