BRAZIL: 3,500 autoworkers have begun their third day of strike action at Volkswagen Brazil over demands to get an increase in wages and a shorter workweek. Work at the Curitiba plant, which produces 500 vehicles - the Audi A3 and VW Golf - per day, has come to a complete halt.
The union is asking for a 10 per cent real wage increase and the reduction of the 44-hour workweek to a 40-hour week.
Although the trade union has been trying over the last months to negotiate with management, the union says that the company persists in repeating old offers, and is not really negotiating in good faith.
The union will continue to work towards achieving an agreement, but they say that management must come up with better proposals.
(NOTE: Late on Thursday, October 19, the union decided to suspend the strike and continue its negotiations with the company.)
