MALAYSIA: The Electrical Industry Workers' Union of Malaysia, an IMF affiliate, reports union-busting activities at a company it organises called Chugai (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.
The union says that Chugai (Malaysia), which has its headquarters in Japan, has been actively harassing workers who are union members ever since the EIWU filed a claim for recognition in June 1999. The company has challenged the award given by the Director General of Industrial Relations and the Director General of Trade Unions on the eligibility of the EIWU to represent Chugai workers and has appealed the decision.
In the latest attempt by the company's Malaysian management to thwart union activities, it sent letters to some 20 employees telling them they were being transferred from their present workplace, situated in Shah Alam, to Banting by December 20, however if they quit the trade union, their transfer would be cancelled.
The IMF is requesting its Japanese affiliate, the Japan Council of Metalworkers' Unions -- IMF-JC to take urgent action with Chugai (Japan) in order to put a stop to the union-busting activities of the Malaysian subsidiary and safeguard the workers' right to freedom of association.
