Trade on the IMF agenda

GENEVA: The main theme at the IMF Central Committee meeting next week in Birmingham, UK, will be the controversial and sensitive issue of free trade in the globalised economy. But trade has to be put into a wider perspective so that it takes into account environmental, development and social issues, including the respect of basic workers' rights, as agreed internationally in ILO core labour standards.

The title for the debate is "Trade and Sustainable Growth and Development." Two speakers have been invited to introduce the discussion: Robert L. Borosage, director of the Institute for America's Future, Washington, D.C., and Leif Pagrotsky, Sweden's Minister of Trade.
