21 November, 1999China's membership will make it more difficult to include core labour standards in the next round of WTO talks but will force an opening of the world's largest market, giving us some access to the country, says IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi.
CHINA: With a trade agreement now signed between China and the USA, and the same expected with the European Union and Canada, China will more than likely become a full member of the WTO and have to open its market to the world.
This opening will be useless unless there is a change in the political system which will allow all Chinese to enjoy freedom and democracy.
