26 August, 1999IAM Boeing workers took to the street in the final week of contract talks between the union and the aircraft manufacturer.

USA: The current four-year contract between the IMF-affiliated International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and Boeing, covering some 46,000 IAM members in the states of Washington, Oregon and Kansas, will expire at 12:01 a.m. on September 2. Union negotiators have said that they expected to receive a "last, best and final offer" from Boeing today, August 27.
A chief negotiator for the IAM said earlier this week that talks aimed at reaching a new agreement were not going well and has predicted the union would go on strike on September 2.
Not yet resolved is the issue dealing with job security. Union members have said that job security and the company's practice of outsourcing work to other companies is their No. 1 concern. Other critical issues are wages, health care and pension benefits. IAM members have struck Boeing two of the last three negotiations.
Some 2,500 IAM Boeing workers took over Washington State Route 99 last Sunday to march from a local park to the hotel where the final week of contract talks has been underway.
