8 September, 1999The situation in East Timor has deteriorated with incredible speed into one of total chaos, says IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi.

GENEVA: On behalf of 22 million members represented by the International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) through its 186 affiliated trade union organisations in 95 countries, General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi has written to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President Habibie of Indonesia.
He is calling on the UN General Secretary to ensure the immediate dispatch by the Security Council of an effective international or regional peacekeeping force. He is also urging President Habibie to cooperate with this and other efforts of the international community to stop the bloodbath in East Timor.
The IMF has contacted its affiliated organisations asking them to support this effort by putting pressure on their national governments to take action concerning the situation in East Timor.
