2 February, 2000The IMF is requesting urgent international solidarity with its autoworker affiliate in Argentina.

ARGENTINA: The Argentinian autoworkers' union SMATA has informed the IMF that U.S.-based multinational Delphi Packard Electric System is transferring the remaining production from its Rio Segundo plant in Argentina to another facility in Curitiba, Brazil. This is yet another example of how the cost of planning failures and mismanagement on the part of corporations ultimately is borne by the workers concerned.
According to SMATA, Delphi undertook a rapid expansion of production and employment at the Rio Segundo plant without a proper evaluation of the market potential, and when problems became evident reduced the workforce without regard for the social consequences.
The IMF has written letters to both the president of Delphi in the USA, and to the director of human resources at the Rio Segundo plant, to protest the mismanagement and lack of concern for the welfare of Delphi's Argentinian workers. The IMF is urging the company to reenter negotiations with the union in order to achieve an equitable settlement for the adversely affected workers. Letters were also sent to the president of Argentina and to the Minister of Labour, asking them to urge the company to reenter negotiations.
The IMF asks all its affiliates to support SMATA by writing letters of protest to the following:
- Mr. David Heilman, President, Delphi Packard Electric Systems, Mail Station 62D, P.O. Box 431, Warren, Ohio 44486, USA
- Mr. Rodolfo González, Director for Human Resources, Delphi Packard Electric Sielin Argentina, Ruta 9, Km. 667, Planta Rio Segundo, Córdoba, Argentina, Fax: 0054 3572 429137
