Sharper IG Metall profile

28 January, 2001Klaus Zwickel, president of the German metalworkers' union IG Metall, has given the starting signal for a three-year continuing debate, "Without Taboos."

GERMANY: Trade unions must change, the IG Metall president, Klaus Zwickel, said last week in a statement opening the union's three-year debate on the future. "The world has changed in the past ten years more seriously and faster than in the 40 years before. We must maintain our strength for the challenges of the present and be fit for the future."
He also would like a combative IG Metall in the future which, if necessary, "does not evade labour disputes," Zwickel continued. At the same time, he will seek to sharpen the profile of IG Metall. The debate on the future is a means to make the organisation "more alive." There are no finished responses.
With its debate on the future, IG Metall wants to influence society. "But we will not only place demands on others," Zwickel said. "We also expect IG Metall to stand the test. We want the participation and activism of members and potential members. We want a broad debate within the organisation. And additionally, we want to carry on our discussion with scientists, with intellectuals, with the public. We will open the doors and windows and let fresh air in."
The main topics for the debate are the future of work, the future of the trade unions, of the economy, society, and politics. The debate is divided into three phases and the third phase starts with a Congress on the future, in Spring 2002. The motto of the campaign is "Neue Wege wagen" or "Dare to go new ways."
