PAKISTAN: While an IMF mission is currently visiting shipbreaking sites near Bhavnagar, India, to examine working conditions and trade union rights there, news has come in of a serious accident at a shipbreaking yard in Pakistan.
According to the report, fire broke out inside a ship where some 12 people were working at the Gaddani shipbreaking yard in the southwest province of Baluchistan. The workers panicked and in their ensuing efforts to get clear of the fire, four of them were trampled and burned to death.
Occupational safety and health in the shipbreaking yards is a priority issue with the IMF, which is campaigning for the enforcement of more effective standards. Respect for trade union rights is a key to achieving better standards.
