BRAZIL: According to a Reuters news report published yesterday (October 8), car assembly workers in Sao Paulo -- the hub of the Brazilian auto industry, with 70 per cent of the country's production -- have launched a campaign of staggered strikes over wages in an attempt to disrupt auto production at plants owned by some of the leading global car manufacturers.
The IMF's metalworker affiliates in Brazil said that as many as 100,000 workers began the work stoppages to strategically target certain plants during several hours each. The first strike took place at a plant belonging to Volkswagen, which is Brazil's No. 1 carmaker.
Similar strikes in the past have hit Fiat, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors and other manufacturers.
Brazil is Latin America's biggest carmaker.
