ROMANIA: Last Friday, the leaders of the trade union at the Resita steel plant, part of the members of the Union Committee, the president of the local branch of the National Trade Union Confederation Cartel ALFA and the general secretary of the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) METAROM decided to adopt a hunger strike beginning on Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in reaction to the attitude of the representatives of the American owner, Noble Ventures, with regard to the very difficult situation confronting the Romanian plant.
A short history of the details are:
-- In June 2000, the American company Noble Ventures bought the majority stock of the steel plant from Resita.
-- In January 2001, the plant's production process was stopped.
-- Since April 2001, the employees have not been paid.
-- During this time, the union's leaders were forced to work under pressure and were continually harassed by the owner's representatives.
The Resita trade union is an affiliate of the NTUF METAROM and has 2,500 members. Its members are determined to continue the strike until the production process is restarted and salaries have been paid.
