MEXICO: The IMF has just published a comprehensive report, "Mexico -- Profile of the Metal and Mechanical Industry," which focuses on the composition and location of the Mexican metal industry.
Mexico, the second largest metal manufacturer in Latin America after Brazil, excels especially in the production of automobiles, auto parts and electronics. With a total number of metalworkers estimated at over 1.6 million, up from one million just five years ago, the IMF decided to initiate research in order to obtain an industrial profile with accurate and up-to-date information of the principal features of Mexico's metal industry.
Based on their impact on the Mexican manufacturing scene, the research concentrates on 13 industrial branches ranging from metal processing to the production of transport equipment, and also including metal products, electric and electronic products, and the automotive and auto parts industries.
It is hoped that this data will be useful in organising metalworkers in the country. To assist in this process, the IMF opened a project office in Mexico in March of this year.
"Mexico -- Profile of the Metal and Mechanical Industry" can be downloaded under "Publications" on the IMF's website, or hard copies can be obtained by writing to the IMF on Fax: +41.22.3085055, or by e-mail at [email protected]
The report was elaborated between the University of Puebla and the IMF. It is available in both English and Spanish.
