25 September, 2000The role of social dialogue in the integration process was the purpose of a meeting organised by SIMA for Central and Eastern European metal unions.

PORTUGAL: With the support of the European Union, the IMF's Portuguese affiliate, SIMA (Sindicato das Industrias Metalurgicas e Afins), organised a meeting called "Social Dialogue in the New EU Frontier" on September 21-23, 2000, in Lisbon, with participants from IMF member unions in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland and Romania.
The purpose of this important event was to discuss the role of social dialogue in the integration process.
The meeting was divided into two parts: in the first, guest speakers from Portugal expressed their opinion about the role which social dialogue had played in the integration of Portugal. In the second part of the meeting, unions gave their own outlook on the role of social dialogue, and Reinhard Kuhlmann, general secretary of the European Metalworkers' Federation, spoke from a European point of view.
With representatives from government, employers' organisations and the trade unions, all social partners were present.
A draft version of a research project on social dialogue in the metal sector covering the above-mentioned Central and Eastern European countries, plus Slovakia and Slovenia, was presented at the meeting. Final conclusions and results will soon become available in a printed version and on the Internet and as a CD.
