Philips: no model for industrial relations

Read this article in:

1 February, 2001The IMF Philips World Council will focus on industrial relations with the giant electrical and electronics multinational.

GENEVA: The International Metalworkers' Federation is holding a meeting of its Philips World Council in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on February 6-9, 2001. The main focus of the Council agenda will be on industrial relations, with high priority given to two workshops which will discuss (1) the strengthening of the trade union network within Philips and (2) the trade union position regarding company restructuring, with transfer of production to low-cost countries.
Approximately 70 participants, from 28 trade union organisations in 17 countries where Philips is represented, will attend the World Council.
Contrary to IMF world-level meetings on multinational companies held in the past, at which company management has always agreed to participate, Philips declined the offer to take part in the Amsterdam meeting. A meeting of the IMF's ABB World Council, planned for the end of March 2001 in Mannheim, Germany, will see participation by this company's top management, including its president and CEO, Jörgen Centerman.
A 42-page document prepared for the IMF Philips World Council, written by Dutch affiliate FNV Bondgenoten, gives worldwide information on the company's business activities, financial data, the strategic reorientation of the company, fields in which it is expanding, consolidating, acquisitions, etc. The publication, entitled "Philips - On the Way into the Third Millennium," exists in English, Dutch (original language), German, French and Spanish and can be downloaded from the IMF's website on www.imfmetal.org under "Publications." Hard copies are also available at the IMF head office in Geneva, Tel: (41/22) 308-5050, Fax: (41/22) 308-5055, e-mail: [email protected].
