GERMANY/GLOBAL: A project initiated in the fall of 1999 by the Volkswagen AG General Works Council and Group Works Council has seen over 3.4 million German marks (US$1.7 million) collected during 1999/2000 for donation to children in need. VW workers offer "One Hour for the Future," or one hour of annual pay towards sponsoring projects for street children run by local institutions where the VW Group has operations.
The VW Group plant committee, consisting of all works council chairmen from all plants, plus the children's charity "Terre des Hommes" decide on the projects to be sponsored.
In addition to the workforce of Volkswagen AG, other participants contributing to "One Hour for the Future" are employees of other VW Group companies, such as Audi, VW Sachsen, Seat, Skoda, VW Brazil, VW Brussels, VW Financial Services, as well as suppliers and business partners of VW, retired employees, IG Metall local administrative offices, various action groups and private donations.
Some of the cities where projects are being sponsored are: Sao Paulo (Brazil); Uitenhage, Kwanobuhle and Capetown (South Africa); Puebla (Mexico); Hannover, Halle, Bad Dürrheim and Hamburg (Germany).
