31 January, 2000The IMF's general secretary is concerned about the high concentration of power which increasingly dominates our societies.

GENEVA: With the demise of communism, supporters of neo-liberalism are using the opportunity to stamp their minimalist view of society on the world, writes Marcello Malentacchi, IMF general secretary, in his most recent opinion column. They believe the market must be free to make all decisions, that everything should depend on free and fair competition, and that the role of the state must be reduced - in other words, the power of democratically-elected institutions should be transferred to those controlling capital.
However, in recent times we are seeing more and more of this neo-liberal power concentrated in the hands of a few. It is a new monopoly which will increasingly come to dominate our societies.
Read under the associated link how Malentacchi describes this worrying trend and what he suggests can be done about it.
