12 March, 2000The IMF's three affiliates in Pakistan have signed an agreement to form a metalworkers' council.

PAKISTAN: On March 5, 2000, the All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions, the Automobile, Engineering and Metalworkers' Federation and the Pakistan Metalworkers' Federation signed a joint declaration to form the Pakistan Metalworkers' Council (PMC).
Initial discussions between P. Arunasalam, regional representative for the IMF Southeast Asia Office, and the three IMF affiliates on the creation of a council were held in February 1999. At that time the formation of a council was only a dream, said Arunasalam. After some persuasion, the three affiliates agreed that it would be beneficial to the course of the trade union struggle to unify under the banner of the IMF.
Brian Fredricks, assistant general secretary of the IMF, formally launched the new council, following which A.L. Nizamani, vice president of the All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions, Mehmood Ahmed Qureshi, general secretary of the Automobile, Engineering and Metalworkers' Federation, and Muhammad Suhail, general secretary of the Pakistan Metalworkers' Federation, signed the declaration on behalf of their respective organisations.
The council will be the main organ for communication between the Pakistan metalworkers' unions and the IMF.
