19 September, 1999The launching of the 15-million-member Union Network International (UNI) has been confirmed.

GENEVA: The creation of a new international trade union to give a bigger global voice to 15 million workers in 140 countries has been given the go-ahead. Delegates to a Special Congress in Geneva of the Communications International (CI) have unanimously backed the launch of the UNI from January 1, 2000.
The decision by the CI, which has four million members, follows a similar vote in Sydney in March by the ten-million-member International Federation of Commercial, Clerical, Professional and Technical Employees (FIET). Congresses of the International Graphical Federation (one million members) and the Media and Entertainment International (200,000 members) vote on the project next month.
The launch of the new union international has been achieved in less than two years and is a response to the impact of rapid change in the global economy and in new technology.
Head offices for the Union Network International are currently being built in Nyon, Switzerland.
