Nepal unions make demands

26 April, 2000The Nepal Trade Union Congress has put forth a number of demands to newly re-elected prime minister.

NEPAL: Following their congratulations to Nepal's newly re-elected prime minister, Girija Prasad Koirala, who will be serving a fourth term of office, the Nepal Trade Union Congress put forward a number of demands to the nation's top politician.
Amongst them are the following:
- ratify ILO Conventions Nos. 29 (Forced Labour, dating from 1929), 87 (Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise, 1948), 105 (Abolition of Forced Labour, 1957) and 182 (Worst Forms of Child Labour, 1999);
- request the Labor Commission to review and reform its labour policies;
- submit legislation on social security to Parliament;
- increase the minimum wage;
- declare the First of May as a public holiday;
- revive closed industries.
The prime minister has signed an increment in minimum wages of NRS. 150 in basic pay and NRS. 166 in dearness allowance, which totals NRS 315 on NRS 1,800 per month. (As of January 1999, the exchange rate for the Nepalese rupee was NRS. 67.675 per US$1.) The ministry is also requesting that Parliament discuss ratification of the above-mentioned ILO Conventions in this budget session.
The Nepal Factory Labour Congress, an affiliate of the International Metalworkers' Federation, is a member of the NTUC.
