24 July, 2000The KCTU has adopted a plan to oppose and defeat the government's campaign of repression.
KOREA, REP: The Central Executive Council of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), held on July 22 and 23, has adopted a plan of action targeted at the Kim Dae Jung government's repression of the trade union movement. The new plan includes a schedule of stepped-up actions till August 15.
The first stage of the new plan of action will culminate on July 27, 28, and 29. The first stage is being prepared to maximise the political impact in the run up to the "senior officials meeting" between the governments of south and north Korea scheduled for July 29.
The plan to escalate the action stems from the worsened intransigence of the government and the management of the Hotel Lotte despite the continuing protest actions.
The most recent major protest action organised by the KCTU was on July 20. Over 20,000 workers in 14 major cities throughout the country took part in a nation-wide day of action calling for the end to the government repression and the settlement of the Hotel Lotte issue.
