2 May, 2000The International Metalworkers' Federation will coordinate worker delegates to ILO tripartite industrial sector meeting.

GENEVA: The International Labour Organisation is holding a Tripartite Meeting on the Social and Labour Impact of Globalisation in the Manufacture of Transport Equipment, in Geneva from May 8-12, 2000.
The purpose of such sectoral meetings, which form a part of the ILO's Sectoral Activities Programme, is to "exchange ideas and experience with a view to: fostering a broader understanding of sector-specific issues and problems, developing an international tripartite consensus on sectoral concerns, and providing guidance for national and international policies and measures to deal with related issues and problems." The ILO also says that the aim of these meetings is to promote "harmonisation of all ILO activities of a sectoral character, acting as a focal point between the ILO and its constituents and providing technical advice, practical assistance and support to the latter to facilitate application of international labour standards."
Up to 1996, transport equipment manufacturing was a sub-sector dealt with under the Metal Trades Committee of the ILO. This will be the first meeting for transport equipment manufacturing as an industrial sector on its own. The special report prepared by the ILO for the meeting describes this sector as one "whose members might be more properly termed as providers of transportation systems." Included are all involved in the manufacture of motorcycles, passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy trucks, coaches, buses, locomotives, subway cars, aeroplanes, marine engines, bicycles and ships.
The IMF, which is coordinating the participation of the official delegates in the Workers' Group, held a preliminary meeting on April 25-26 to brief delegates on the work of ILO tripartite industrial sector meetings and on the ILO's special report, as well as prepare the necessary trade union response to the 11 discussion points drawn up by the ILO for its meeting. A second IMF preliminary meeting will take place on May 7.
Sixteen of the 18 worker delegates represent IMF-affiliated unions from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Poland, Republic of Korea, Romania, Russia, South Africa, United Kingdom, USA and Venezuela.
