Machinists are fast-growing

12 September, 2000IAM membership has increased by 20,000 since their last convention.

USA: The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is the fastest-growing industrial union in North America. Dues-paying membership increased by 5.6 percent since 1996, thus adding nearly 20,000 new members. "The state of our union is good," Thomas Buffenbarger declared at the IAM's 35th Grand Lodge Convention this week in San Francisco. "It is contemporary, it is innovative and it is strong."
He credited this success to a skilled team of dedicated organisers and a comprehensive organising programme which has given the IAM an 82 percent win record. "We win eight out of every 10 campaigns that go to an election," Buffenbarger said.
Much of that success can be traced to the Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, in southern Maryland. The ongoing expansion there will more than double its capacity.
