19 September, 1999A long-time friend of the IMF has lost his battle against cancer.
FINLAND: After two years of a hard fight against cancer, Jukka Oas died yesterday, September 19, at the age of 47.
Our thoughts go to his wife, Ulla, his son, and all his family, to whom we offer our deepest sympathy.
Jukka's demise was expected. He knew it the whole time and made no secret of it.
When the doctor told him about his condition, he said that he would continue to work until the very last moment. And he did so.
He attended the last IMF Central Committee meeting, in Helsinki in June, as a special guest. It was a great pleasure for all his old friends to see him and to talk to him in the same way that we always did.
For almost ten years, Jukka was the international secretary of the Finnish Metalworkers' Federation and was very active in the IMF's many educational projects in Latin America, Asia and Africa, especially in Latin America, where he had already been very engaged as the general secretary of the Socialist Youth International. During the last years of his life, he worked as the representative of the Commission of the European Union in Finland.
IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi said: "I personally had the pleasure of being with Jukka in many countries around the world and will remember him as a great comrade with a very nice personality and an extremely well-developed sense of humour."
