19 August, 1999Major negotiations will take place in the auto and auto-parts industries.

BRAZIL: The International Metalworkers Federation's two Brazilian affiliates, CUT-CNM and Fuerza Sindical -- CNTM, have launched a joint campaign to obtain an agreement for the auto and auto-parts industries. Their principal demands are:
- the signing of an industry-wide agreement;
- reduction of working hours to 36 per week;
- a company pledge to maintain employment in existing plants and to meet new hiring targets when subsidies are received;
- uniform working conditions throughout the industry.
These demands are in full accord with the IMF's action programme and policies adopted by its 200 affiliates, who represent 22 million metalworkers worldwide. Consequently, the Brazilian affiliates will be able to count on strong international support.
The IMF is writing to the presidents of both the Brazilian Association of Vehicle Manufacturers (ANFAVEA) and the Brazilian Parts Manufacturers (Sindipeças/Abipeças) to urge them to immediately enter into good-faith negotiations with Fuerza Sindical -- CNTM and CUT-CNM. The IMF intends to monitor the situation closely, to keep its affiliates around the world informed, and to mobilize international support for the Brazilian affiliates if required.
