3 April, 2000The IMF's two affiliates in the Republic of Korea have organised a joint seminar on occupational health and safety.
KOREA, REP: The Federation of Korean Metalworkers' Trade Unions (FKMTU) and the Korean Metal Workers' Federation (KMWF) held a three-day joint seminar on occupational health and safety in Seoul. The discussion group focused on the effects of the economic crisis and restructuring policies on workers' health and safety. The participants, of whom five were women, represented major company unions from different parts of the country.
The participants adopted a joint resolution in which they urge the government to improve legislation on health and safety in the workplace. The status of workers' health and safety representatives (honorary health and safety managers) should be improved and the two competing federations are committed to including this demand in their goals for the next round of collective bargaining. They have also vowed to step up their own work in occupational health and safety, including joint training activities.
The seminar was partly financed by the IMF and the CO-Industri in Denmark.
