28 November, 2001The IMF will organise a task force to decide on action to bring the government of Korea to release trade unionists.

GENEVA/STOCKHOLM: The IMF general secretary, Marcello Malentacchi today - in a statement addressed to all IMF affiliates - expresses the IMF's extreme concern at developments in South Korea.

"The sentencing and imprisonment of KMWF president Mun once again illustrates the anti-union and anti-worker stance of the South Korean regime," he says.

He also stresses the IMFs long time committment to help the Korean workers:

"The IMF is urging all its affiliates to protest this action by the Korean government not only with letters of protest. We will organise urgently a task force consisting of our key unions around the world to decide on appropriate action to bring the government of Korea to release all trade unionists and begin serious negotiations with all labour leaders to find a solution to the current problems."
