IMF shocked<br>over Nobel nomination

13 October, 1999An NGO puts forward the names of Ecuador's and Peru's presidents as nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize.

GENEVA: Upon learning of the nomination for the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize of the presidents of Ecuador, Dr. Jamil Mahuad, and Peru, Alberto Fujimori, IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi declared his deep shock and total objection, saying "This is scandalous!!!" As the nomination was made by a non-governmental organisation reportedly calling itself the Latin American Association of Human Rights, Malentacchi went on to say that "this goes to show that we must always check on NGOs, always, so we know what they really stand for."
In a statement issued by the Brussels-based International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, "the peace agreement recently reached between Ecuador and Peru, which is the apparent motive for the nominations, is not the unique and exclusive achievement of their leaders but rather that of the people of both countries, exhausted by years of war and conflict... These nominations, which have not included any consultations with the people of either nation, certainly do not express the opinion of Peru's and Ecuador's genuine human rights movement."
President Fujimori withdrew Peru from the Organisation of American States' Inter-American Commission on Human Rights because he did not appreciate international criticism he was getting on his abysmal human rights record.
Ecuador has suffered considerable political and economic turmoil over recent years. A year ago a well-known trade unionist was assassinated, and many in the country have questioned President Mahuad's management of his job.
