18 January, 2000Chile's newly-elected president promises to work towards the elimination of the inequities and suffering of the 20th century.

CHILE: In a congratulatory letter sent to Ricardo Lagos on his recent election as president of Chile, Marcello Malentacchi, general secretary of the International Metalworkers' Federation, writes that the IMF and its affiliates received the news of the socialist's victory with "great pleasure and satisfaction." Malentacchi says that "in this period of transition, we all know you will make sure that democracy and freedom will be consolidated in Chile."
The IMF has strong links with Chilean workers, especially through its long-affiliated copper workers' union - the FTC, the electro, metal, mining and auto workers in FENTEMA and CONSFETEMA, and the steel workers of Huachipato. All are great supporters of Ricardo Lagos, and in his letter to the newly-elected Chilean president, who will take office in March, the IMF general secretary states that these unions would give the necessary backing to the Lagos government to help it "carry out the programme with which you have gained the support of he Chilean people."
