MEXICO: Mexico is a major centre for the metal industry in the world. Employment figures for this industry have grown from one million in 1994, to 1.6 million today, representing 38% of all industry workers in this country. However, only 30,000 workers belong to the five unions currently affiliated to the International Metalworkers' Federation.
The metal sector - especially automobile assembly and parts, electronics and electrical - is Mexico's most important industry, both in terms of GDP and the workforce, which is concentrated in medium- and large-sized plants.
After several years of study and discussions, the IMF Executive Committee has decided to open a project office in Mexico in order to assist in organising and affiliating this large number of metalworkers.
Responsible for the new office will be Everardo Fimbres, who has a background as a union activist in Sonora.
