BIRMINGHAM: A working group has proposed the following changes in the structures of the International Metalworkers' Federation, which have been approved by the Executive Committee:
- Central Committee to meet once every 2 years instead of the present annual meetings;
- Executive Committee to consist of 18 members instead of the present 14 members;
- Seats in the Executive Committee to be distributed as follows: 3 representatives each for Africa, Asia and Latin America instead of 2; 3 representatives from North America (no change); 5 representatives from Europe (no change), and 1 representative from Eastern Europe instead of the current 1 observer.
A final decision will be taken by the IMF Congress in Sydney, Australia, in November next year.
The 1997 IMF Congress, in San Francisco, USA, decided to establish the working group, whose chairman, George Kourpias, was the former president of the U.S. Machinists' union.
