GERMANY/EUROPE: IG Metall, the 2.7 million-strong German metalworkers' union, launched a two-week protest on Monday, November 13, 2000, against the lack of support for shipyards within the European Union.
A lifeboat carrying a large banner which reads "Work for the Yards, a Future for Europe" began its journey along the northeastern coast of Germany, with its first port of call being Peene-Werft, in Wolgast.
The boat will continue its voyage westwards, calling at Wismar, Lübeck, Flensburg, Kiel, Emden, Hamburg and Bremerhaven, before reaching its final destination of Papenburg on November 24.
