20 March, 2000German metalworkers are gearing up for widespread warning strikes from March 29 onwards.
GERMANY: In the latest development in the on-going bargaining round between the German metalworkers' union and the metal and engineering employers, IG Metall's highest organ between congresses, the Council or "Beirat", has called on all union members to prepare for "massive warning strikes" in view of the "totally insufficient employers' offers."
The strikes will begin on March 29.
IG Metall is insisting by all means on achieving the possibility of retirement at age 60, a demand which is strongly backed by its membership. The union says that 142,000 jobs could thus be created in the metal and electro industry for the young and unemployed. Moreover, a public opinion poll which was conducted by the German television channel ZDF has shown 61% support for what is being called "a bridge of employment between young and older workers."
