High-level auto council meets

21 September, 2000The IMF World Auto Council will discuss building up global trade union solidarity in a globalised auto industry.

GENEVA/GERMANY: The central theme of the upcoming IMF World Auto Council, meeting at the CongressPark in Wolfsburg, Germany, on September 26-27, focuses on building global trade union solidarity in a globalised auto industry.
In an opening address, Steve Yokich, president of the IMF Automotive Department and the United Autoworkers of America, will speak to the changes which have taken place in this core global industry and the challenges they present for the unions and autoworkers.
IMF Automotive Department director, Peter Unterweger, will report on trends in economic as well as trade union developments in the auto industry.
Ferdinand Piëch, chief executive of the giant transnational auto company Volkswagen, will speak on the trends and outlook for the global automobile industry as the world enters the 3rd millennium.
Klaus Zwickel, president of the IMF and the German metalworkers' union IG Metall, will offer trade union responses to the challenges of globalisation in the auto industry, and Marcello Malentacchi, IMF general secretary, will focus on trends in the automotive industry and the IMF's action programme.
Two panel discussions, both to be moderated by Paul Bailey of the ILO's Sectoral Activities Department, will debate: (1) "The Social and Union Impact of Automobile Industry Trends" and (2) "Trade Union Strategies and Cooperation to Shape Globalisation."
Over 280 participants from auto unions in 32 countries worldwide will take part in the Council. Among guests attending the Council will be Germany's minister of transport, Reinhard Klimmt.
