GERMANY: The German tripartite roundtable conference, or the "Alliance for Jobs," bringing together government, employers and trade unions, held another meeting in Berlin on December 12 to deal mainly with the demand of the German metalworkers' union to make retirement at 60 a possibility.
IG Metall expects Chancellor Schröder to take the decisive step towards a settlement on this issue. There are certain signals from the employers' side that an agreement might be reached at the next meeting, which is scheduled for December 23. This date, set by the German chancellor, shows the determination of the German government to reach a solution before the end of 1999.
