18 August, 1999The International Metalworkers' Federation expresses its profound sympathy with the people of Turkey, and with all metalworkers and their families affected by one of the strongest earthquakes this century, and urges humanitarian support.

TURKEY: Before dawn on Tuesday, August 17, an earthquake of the magnitude of 7.8 on the open-ended Richter scale hit the northwestern provinces of Turkey. This region is the most heavily populated of the country, where 45% of the entire population lives, and is Turkey's industrial heartland.
Thus far, the death toll stands at 4,000, with over 16,000 people seriously injured. Among the many places hit by this earthquake were Izmit, an industrial city and port on the Sea of Marmara, 90 kilometers (55 miles) southeast of Istanbul, which was at the epicenter, and the nearby port and navy base of Golcuk. Some neighborhoods of Istanbul were also heavily damaged.
In the name of the IMF and its 22 million members worldwide, General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi has expressed his profound sympathy with the people of Turkey and total solidarity with all Turkish metalworkers and their families who have been affected by this terrible disaster.
He is urging all IMF affiliates to do their maximum in supporting humanitarian aid organisations for relief help. Malentacchi said that "we must stand by our Turkish brothers and sisters in this time of need and help them survive this crisis."
