8 June, 2000U.S. GE unions are currently engaged in national collective bargaining with General Electric.
USA: The Coordinated Bargaining Committee of GE Unions (CBC), which is currently involved in national collective bargaining with General Electric in the U.S., has scheduled the second annual GE International Solidarity Day for Friday, June 23, 2000. The current contract for GE unions expires on June 25.
As a follow-up to the very successful IMF-GE World Council Meeting, this past March in Washington, D.C., the CBC is continuing to pursue an international approach to its negotiations. The CBC has proposed, for example, that GE adopt an international code of conduct, and it has raised concerns about GE's labour practices around the world.
For the International Solidarity Day, the CBC will be conducting rallies in New York City as well as elsewhere in the U.S., and would ask non-U.S. GE unions to participate by also holding rallies, distributing information, etc. and even participate, if possible, in the GE Solidarity Day. The CBC will be able to provide leaflets and other materials in a limited number of languages (Spanish, French, Italian, etc.), so for those interested, please contact the IMF Secretariat in Geneva, tel: +41-22-3085050, fax: +41-22-3085055, e-mail: [email protected]
The IMF is writing to its affiliated GE unions worldwide to send letters of support to the CBC, c/o the IUE in Washington, D.C., Fax: +1-202-7854563, e-mail: [email protected]
At the upcoming IMF Central Committee meeting, in Birmingham, UK, on June 21-22, the CBC will provide an update on its negotiations with GE.
