GENEVA: The WTO, after the meeting in Seattle, will start a new round of negotiations which will hopefully lead to more free trade all over the world, writes Marcello Malentacchi in his new IMF Opinion on this website.
But free trade must be fair trade.
The International Metalworkers' Federation wants the WTO to include a clause in a new agreement which guarantees full respect for the ILO's core labour standards. Trade unions must put their own national governments under a great deal of pressure to raise this issue at the meeting in Seattle.
