25 November, 1999With the government and employers sticking to their old positions, the trade unions are determined to have their say.

KOREA, REP: The Federation of Korean Trade Unions, the largest umbrella labour group in South Korea, staged a mass rally in Seoul on November 21, with some 50,000 workers plus their families from all over the country demonstrating their growing disappointment over the unchanged economic policies of the government and employers.
The protest march clearly underlined the determination of the workers and trade unions to draw attention to their demands for the elimination of anti-labour regulations; reduction of statutory weekly working hours, from 44 to 40, and a ban on state-led unilateral restructuring.
The FKTU has become increasingly frustrated with the continued lack of genuine dialogue and negotiation in the Tripartite Commission, and due to the unchanged positions of the government and employers, the trade union federation has announced it will suspend its participation in the tripartite group.
