Expert study on asbestosis

Read this article in:

1 March, 2001This illness, which comes from exposure to asbestos particles, kills 100-200 people a year in Finland.

FINLAND: One cannot speak enough about the dangers of working with asbestos and the illness asbestosis.
The publication "Trade Union News from Finland" reports that an expert group will study the origins of asbestosis as well as legal attitudes towards this illness. Every year, between 100 to 200 people in Finland die of asbestosis-related illnesses.
According to the SAK -- the Central Trade Union Organisation of Finland -- this means that asbestosis has caused the all-time worst catastrophe deriving from the working environment. Not only does it bring with it immense human suffering but also major expense for society.
Medical science recognised the dangers of asbestosis as long ago as the first half of the 20th century. Three universities have reacted to the SAK initiative, which was made a year ago, to establish a research project to study why this asbestosis catastrophe was ever allowed to happen.
The study, which will also include the general attitude of the Finnish judiciary towards this illness, will be conducted under strictly academic conditions and criteria.
