2 August, 1999The European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF) appeals to the European Union to push for the further improvement of social dialogue.
The 3rd week of the EMF will take place in Tampere, Finland from 16th to 19th
October 1999 under the motto "The European Social Model and Social Dialogue - points of reference and future perspectives." The EMF takes the occasion to present its views and
positions to the Finnish EU Council presidency in a policy paper.
In the light of ongoing industrial change in the European economy, particularly in the metalworking sector, the role of social dialogue has taken on a special importance, says the policy paper. The EMF and its member organisations want to take the responsibility and contribute to shaping the far-reaching structural changes in the metalworking sector by means of dialogue and concerted action between the social partners, tailored to meet the special circumstances of the metalworking industry.
The EMF is convinced that a result-oriented social dialogue, that takes account of the interests of both industry and workers will guarantee the viability of the metalworking sector.
The EMF therefore appeals to the Finnish presidency to push for the furhter development and improvement of sectoral social dialogue. To this end, the European Commission should be charged with convening a European conference on sectoral social dialogue in an attempt to bring the relevant dialogue partners together, establish best practice and create a strong impetus for the development of Europe into a "genuine bargaining area".
The policy paper has been elaborated by the current EMF Troika - Austria, Finland and Germany.
