TURKEY: Türk Metal Sendikasi has written to thank the International Metalworkers' Federation and its affiliates for their concern and efforts on behalf of the victims of the August 17 earthquake which hit the industrial heartland of northwestern Turkey, causing heavy loss of life and injury. Updated, official government figures of the death toll have reached 15,000 as of today, September 2, with those suffering very serious injury at 35,000. There are fears, however, that the actual number of deaths may reach as high as 30,000 once all the rubble has been removed.
Türk Metal lost 15 members in the earthquake, most of whom were in the provinces where the cities of Izmit and Adapazari are situated. Approximately 25 members sustained injuries and 50 close family relatives died. Some 200 houses belonging to members either collapsed or were so heavily damaged that they can no longer be used.
The union has started its own aid campaign to help metalworkers and their families who suffered in this disaster.
