SWITZERLAND: A crucial election is taking place in the Swiss Parliament to reconfirm each of the seven members of the governing Federal Council for the coming four years.
Marcello Malentacchi, IMF general secretary, says in his new opinion column that although the International Metalworkers' Federation does not normally interfere in a single country's domestic politics, there are special reasons now to speak up in support of Ruth Dreifuss, who was the first woman president of Switzerland (during this past year) and especially a dedicated fighter in support of the social needs of the Swiss people.
However, the country's right-wing party is now trying to manoeuvre to get her out of the Swiss government.
