USA: A tentative agreement for a three-year contract was reached on September 4, 2000, between the United Steelworkers of America and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc., thus avoiding possible industrial action. The deal, which improves working conditions, wages and pensions for 8,400 workers at nine U.S. Bridgestone/Firestone facilities, must still be ratified by union members. If accepted, all contracts will expire on the same date -- April 23, 2003 -- and the 2003 negotiations will all take place in the same general location.
On August 18, with just 14 days left before contract extention agreements were to terminate, and after nearly six months of negotiations and an unacceptable proposal by management, the USWA issued the company with strike notice. The union stated that if during this period an agreement was not reached, a strike at every plant location was probable.
